As almost all of you already know, Tiger Woods, the most prominent golfer in the world in the past two decades, will miss his first Masters in 20 years. The affect that his absence brings to the tour and more importantly, this tournament, is a major hit for the USGA. Looking at it from an outsiders perspective, it is pretty surreal how a golfer who has not won a Major since the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines and his last green jacket victory is approaching its nine year anniversary (yes, NINE), has such a big impact on the game of golf.
So, what does his absence mean for the Masters next week? Well, one thing that is for sure is that you will not be spotting that “Sunday Tiger red” come the final day of the tournament. But, what you will see is a group of very talented golfers, some attempting to join golf’s elite club at Augusta National and others who are already there trying to leave another mark on their legacy.
Who can we expect to see atop the leader board come Sunday? Well there is a strong playing field of golfers who have the talent to be there, but right now we can take a look at the favorites:
Rory McIlroy (7/1): Looking for his first green jacket, McIlroy is currently the favorite to finally add it to his wardrobe in 2014. After a rocky 2013 season, the 24 year old from Northern Ireland has been competitive in his first tournaments this year. Don’t be surprised if you see him in that final pairing Sunday.
Adam Scott (9/1): Last year’s Masters winner is looking to become the first golfer to win back-to-back Masters since Tiger Woods did it in 2001 and 2002.
Phil Mickelson (12/1): Lefty is looking to join the elite club consisting of Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus who all have 4+ Master’s wins.
Jason Day (14/1): Playing in his first tournament since winning the World Match Play back in February because of a thumb injury, Day has the talent to win his first major if he is able to stay healthy.
Dustin Johnson (16/1): With only one career top 25 finish at Augusta National which came last season, Johnson has the opportunity to make some noise at this year’s Masters and take home his first major with a green jacket.
Henrik Stenson (18/1): Stenson played great down the stretch in last season’s majors, finishing respectively in 2nd at The Open Championship and 3rd at the PGA Championship. Hopefully he can stay hot in the next week and you will see him in the final pairing Sunday.
Who is your favorite to take home the green jacket?
