In the beginning of Fall Rory McIlroy was named the 2014 PGA Tour Player of the Year. This was the second time in the last three years that Rory has claimed this award, rightfully named in honor of an all-time great as the Jack Nicklaus Award. This time around though, the coveted trophy has put him on a shortlist of golf greats as one of the few multiple time winners since the award was created in 1990.
As the year winds down and the 2015 Tour season has started back up, Rory McIlroy can definitely be proud of what he has accomplished in the past year. The 2014 PGA Tour season was a breath of fresh air for McIlroy as he rebounded from a shaky 2013.
It was not all fun and games Rory early in the season though. As I am sure you probably heard at the start of the 2014 season Rory was engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. It was just this past May, after a few up and down performances on the Tour, he broke off the engagement. What happened to his golf game following was exactly what everyone did not expect. McIlroy went out and won the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour that following weekend with a dominating Sunday performance. And that was just the beginning of what turned into a special stretch of 3 months for him. Within that short time period, McIlroy was able to win the British Open and claim the third leg of the career Grand Slam. Now, Rory is just a green jacket away this upcoming year to complete that accomplishment. Unfortunately for him, he has never fared better then 8th at Augusta National so far in his career. Within the following weeks, McIlroy was able to a few more wins. The first was at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. The second was a dominating performance at the PGA Championship, where he was able to hold off Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson on a crazy Sunday. His 2014 season can be summed up in that small three month span, but what he was able to accomplish in that time was something that will be hard to match for anyone in the foreseeable future.
The year of 2014 is definitely a year to remember for Rory McIlroy and one he hopes to build on in the upcoming years of his young, notable career. This definitely was not the first and is definitely not the last time that you will see the name, Rory McIlroy, listed as the world’s top golfer.
